The Magic Performance & Health Elixir
As an active cyclist who logs up to 16,000 miles a year of training and racing, I am always looking for ways to enhance my performance and health. I have often read about the importance of including L-Arginine as part of one’s program of nutritional supplementation, but I take a slug of things every morning so I simply never got around to adding it to my regimen. In the book that I co-wrote with Rose Marie Ray, “From Broken Neck to Broken Records, a Masters Cyclist’s Guide to Winning,” I list those supplements.
On January 17th 2011, I had a visit with my family physician for a follow-up on routine blood work. Knowing how active I am (as an aside, he calls me his most healthy patient), he told me that he had been successfully using L-Arginine supplementation in his practice and discovered that he was able to remove numerous patients from blood pressure medication who took the “proper” dosages of the substance. He indicated that the substance, when taken in the proper dosage acted as a vasodilator enhancing cardiac health. He further indicated that it also worked similar to Viagra. He related the story of Dr. Julius Ignarro who won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1998 for his work leading to the discovery of the importance of L-Arginine to cardiac health.
Dr. Ignarro’s years of research revealed the importance of Nitric Oxide to cardiovascular health, and further discovered that a daily regimen of L-Arginine mixed with other substances such as L-Citrullene, when taken in a minimum dosage of 5 grams daily was an incredible enhancement to the production of Nitric Oxide and hence cardiac health, and was even capable of reversing cardio vascular damage. I highly recommend Dr. Ignarro’s book to anyone who comes equipped with a heart. The book is entitled, “NO More Heart Disease: How Nitric Oxide Can Prevent—Even Reverse—Heart Disease and Strokes.” It can be purchased on Amazon.com for around 11 bucks:
Both I and my significant other, Rose Marie Ray (a very active cyclist and triathlete), commenced taking L-Arginine that very day. Within a couple of weeks, I started noticing an amazing change. As an aside, I am a very active cycling competitor who has won 25 state and national cycling championships. I hold both national and numerous state time trial records. Rosie has also won numerous cycling and triathlon titles. I keep meticulous records of my training, which include monitoring and recording my heart rate during workouts and competition. For the same level of effort, I discovered that using L-Arginine, my heart rates were running much lower for the same effort. Rosie noticed the same phenomenon. During fast training rides, I found that I could cycle much faster with less pain.
Suddenly, we were both racing faster and setting personal bests in our 70s! In June, after being on the L-Arginine regimen for five (5) months, I not only won a national championship at the Senior Olympics in Houston, but shattered the national 5 Kilometer time trial record for my age group. Even more startling, with close to 400 cyclists competing, and with 4 younger age groups than mine, I turned the top time of the day for all age groups! Rosie had her best times and placed in the top six in the cycling competitions and won a silver medal in the triathlon at the event.
I continued to turn faster times and not only shattered the 15 kilometer age group course record at the venerable Fort Desoto Time Trial series in St. Petersburg, FL, by over 4.5 minutes, but at the Georgia Golden Olympics in September, I again turned the top time of the day for all competitors in the 5K time trial with the closest competitor, who was 54 years old, (I’m 71) 7 seconds back!
If you decide to go on a regimen of L-Arginine, be aware of the fact that very few vendors offer the proper dosage of five (5) grams mixed with L-Citrillene and other important substances. I take the product which has the formulation recommended by Dr. Ignarro, L-arginine Complete. It can be ordered from their website at:
Through my recommendation of this product, many of my fellow cyclists have begun taking it. Yesterday, I had a conversation with one of the founders of the company, Trevor Farnes. I asked him if it might be possible to give some kind of consideration to anyone ordering the product on the basis of my recommendation. He later got back to me and said that if anyone orders the product and uses the promo code of SandyScott, they will get a discount.
Understand that I don’t enrich myself a single dime if you order. I am simply so passionate about this amazing elixir that I want everyone to know about it. It has made a substantial difference for Rosie and me. I believe you will find that it will do the same for you. This weekend, at the Florida state time trial championships, I fully expect to break the state 20-kilometer time trial record that I set last year!
At the end of this piece I indicated that I expected to break my Florida state 20 kilometer time trial record at the state time trial championships. Mission accomplished! I not only won the state championship, but I shattered my record by one minute and 14 seconds that I set last year on a less than ideal racing day. The weather was rainy and windy. What I particularly find amazing is that 4 years ago, the championships were held at the same venue, but that day was ideal with light breezes and sunny skies. On that day 4 years ago, I broke the 20 kilometer state record in the younger 65-69 age group. My time this year was 7 seconds faster than it was 4 years ago! L-Arginine when taken in the proper amount and mixture, is truly a wonderful elixir which I believe with all my heart (no pun intended) not only enhances one’s health, but also one’s athletic performance in aerobic type sports.
At the Florida State Senior Games Championships in early December 2011, not only did I break both the 5 & 10 kilometer state time trial records, but my significant other Rosie, who had never won a Senior Games time trial championship in all her years of competing at the event, also not only won both events, but broke the state records in both events. We both love our L-Arginine – Complete!!
I had an exam with my ophthalmologist last week, and I added the following to my facebook page – apparently L-arginine seems to have a very positive affect on intraocular eye pressure and I would certainly suggest trying it if you are running a bit high and hence are worried about glaucoma:
The healthful lifestyle really pays off. I just returned from an exam by my Ophthalmologist, Dr. Rob Weinstock of the Eye Institute of West Florida. He was so amazed at the health of the interior of my eyes, vessels, pressure, etc., that he asked to take a series of photographs of my inner eyes for use in lectures. He indicated that if an ophthalmologist examined my eyes, he would think that he was looking at the eyes of someone 25 years younger. My intraocular pressures were the lowest they have ever been by a reading of 5 mm hg. 8 mm hg less than they were about 10 years ago! He said that the vessels, etc., of the inner eye gives a great look at the condition of the body as a whole, and complimented me on my apparently very successful health regimen.
The only thing that I have been doing differently is my daily regimen of L-Arginine Complete (5 grams daily), which I believe has had a substantial affect on my riding, but I have reason to believe that the vasodilation effects of the substance has even improved my eye health.
An interesting note from my bicycle ride today. For three hours of riding this morning, my heart rate average was a mere 73 beats per minute. About an hour into the ride, I was riding along for an extended period at 63 BPM, lower than many people’s resting heart rate! In contrast yesterday, when I went off the front of my club ride and needed that extra heart RPM, I registered 183 BPM. Prior to going on L-Arginine, I assuredly could not have ridden my bicycle for 3 hours an averaged a paltry 73 beats per minute.
I am particularly excited by what I am about to report. A training partner with whom I have ridden for years (he is currently 40 years old) was on blood pressure meds for very high blood pressure. He began a regimen of L-Arginine Complete some months ago, and was astounded at the positive difference in his cycling performance. He also noted that his blood pressure was continuously going down. Finally, it had come down so much that he decided to see if he could stop taking the meds and maintain a normal blood pressure. It worked! He is now off of medications and his daily measurements reveal normal blood pressure!
