TO MY LIBERAL AND CONSERVATIVE FRIENDS
I think I finally realize why the Navy forbids discussing certain topics in the officer’s wardroom – politics being one of them. It’s a very emotional subject. Unfortunately, almost to a person, everyone I know who describes themselves as either liberal or conservative goes right down the party line drinking at the well of party dogma and spewing forth those “canned” opinions. Give me an issue and almost to a certainty will I be able to tell most of you what your opinion will be. My significant other, for example, has never been known to stray from the “bleeding heart” liberal school of political opinion, and I mean NEVER!
I on the other hand feature myself as a fierce independent (stressing the fierce ). I actually came equipped with adequate brainpower to assess each issue on its individual merits and come to an opinion based on the facts of the issue. I probably tend to lean slightly right of center (far right when it comes to financial issues), but I lean left of center when it comes to people issues. However, I do not follow any script. For example, I believe vehemently in gay rights and the rights of gays to enjoy the same privileges of other couples including the right to marry. However, upon witnessing the birth of my eldest son, I became an immediate enemy of abortion and the right to choose that path.
The current presidential campaign is one of the most divisive ever. According to an article in this morning’s “Tampa Bay Times,” the president has fulfilled only 37 percent of his campaign promises. Hence, his campaign is dedicated to turning the spotlight away from his failings by attacking his opponents in a very personal and bitter manner. Obama is on a path to supplanting Jimmy Carter as the worst president in the history of the Republic!
I note that because of this incredibly divisive campaign, many have unfriended people on facebook simply because they “liked” something with which they disagreed. It’s getting rather ridiculous when we cannot agree to disagree, state our opinions freely, and then go have a friendly beer after the battle.
When you see me “like” something that Romney or his running mate says, it’s not because I like them, but it’s because I like anything that will bring a change from the current administration. Unfortunately, I don’t see where I am given a choice “Charlie” to vote for another candidate.
I am not trying to start a political debate on my opinions or the issues that I have brought up – there is enough of that ad nauseum in this and every other medium. I simply felt the need to state the above.
